PROLOG

6 This manual page is part of the POSIX Programmer's Manual. The Linux
7 implementation of this interface may differ (consult the corresponding
8 Linux manual page for details of Linux behavior), or the interface may
9 not be implemented on Linux.

NAME

13 putwc — put a wide character on a stream
14

SYNOPSIS

16       #include <stdio.h>
17       #include <wchar.h>
18
19       wint_t putwc(wchar_t wc, FILE *stream);
20

DESCRIPTION

22 The functionality described on this reference page is aligned with the
23 ISO C standard. Any conflict between the requirements described here
24 and the ISO C standard is unintentional. This volume of POSIX.1‐2008
25 defers to the ISO C standard.
26
27 The putwc() function shall be equivalent to fputwc(), except that if it
28 is implemented as a macro it may evaluate stream more than once, so the
29 argument should never be an expression with side-effects.
30

RETURN VALUE

32       Refer to fputwc().
33

ERRORS

35       Refer to fputwc().
36
37 The following sections are informative.
38

EXAMPLES

40       None.
41

APPLICATION USAGE

43 Since it may be implemented as a macro, putwc() may treat a stream
44 argument with side-effects incorrectly. In particular, putwc(wc,*f++)
45 need not work correctly. Therefore, use of this function is not recom‐
46 mended; fputwc() should be used instead.
47

RATIONALE

49       None.
50

FUTURE DIRECTIONS

52       None.
