6       whatis - describe what a command is

SYNOPSIS

9       whatis command ...

DESCRIPTION

12       Whatis looks up a given command and gives the header line from the man‐
13       ual section.  You can then run the man(1) command to get more  informa‐
14       tion.   If  the line starts `name(section) ...' you can do `man section
15       name' to get the documentation for it.  Try `whatis ed'  and  then  you
16       should do `man 1 ed' to get the manual.

18       Whatis is actually just the -f option to the man(1) command.
