PROLOG

6 This manual page is part of the POSIX Programmer's Manual. The Linux
7 implementation of this interface may differ (consult the corresponding
8 Linux manual page for details of Linux behavior), or the interface may
9 not be implemented on Linux.

NAME

13 getchar — get a byte from a stdin stream
14

SYNOPSIS

16       #include <stdio.h>
17
18       int getchar(void);
19

DESCRIPTION

21 The functionality described on this reference page is aligned with the
22 ISO C standard. Any conflict between the requirements described here
23 and the ISO C standard is unintentional. This volume of POSIX.1‐2008
24 defers to the ISO C standard.
25
26 The getchar() function shall be equivalent to getc(stdin).
27

RETURN VALUE

29       Refer to fgetc().
30

ERRORS

32       Refer to fgetc().
33
34 The following sections are informative.
35

EXAMPLES

37       None.
38

APPLICATION USAGE

40 If the integer value returned by getchar() is stored into a variable of
41 type char and then compared against the integer constant EOF, the com‐
42 parison may never succeed, because sign-extension of a variable of type
43 char on widening to integer is implementation-defined.
44

RATIONALE

46       None.
47

FUTURE DIRECTIONS

49       None.
