NAME

13 setpgrp — set the process group ID
14

SYNOPSIS

16 #include <unistd.h>
17
18       pid_t setpgrp(void);
19

DESCRIPTION

21 If the calling process is not already a session leader, setpgrp() sets
22 the process group ID of the calling process to the process ID of the
23 calling process. If setpgrp() creates a new session, then the new ses‐
24 sion has no controlling terminal.
25
26 The setpgrp() function has no effect when the calling process is a ses‐
27 sion leader.
28

RETURN VALUE

30 Upon completion, setpgrp() shall return the process group ID.
31

ERRORS

33 No errors are defined.
34
35 The following sections are informative.
36

EXAMPLES

38 None.
39

APPLICATION USAGE

41 It is unspecified whether this function behaves as setpgid(0,0) or set‐
42 sid() unless the process is already a session leader. Therefore, appli‐
43 cations are encouraged to use setpgid() or setsid() as appropriate.
44

RATIONALE

46 None.
47

FUTURE DIRECTIONS

49 The setpgrp() function may be removed in a future version.
