6 perllinux - Perl version 5 on Linux systems

9 This document describes various features of Linux that will affect how
10 Perl version 5 (hereafter just Perl) is compiled and/or runs.
11 Deploying Perl on Linux
13 Normally one can install /usr/bin/perl on Linux using your
14 distribution's package manager (e.g: "sudo apt-get install perl", or
15 "sudo dnf install perl"). Note that sometimes one needs to install some
16 extra system packages in order to be able to use CPAN frontends, and
17 that messing with the system's perl is not always recommended. One can
18 use perlbrew <https://perlbrew.pl/> to avoid such issues.
19 Otherwise, perl should build fine on Linux using the mainstream
21 compilers GCC and clang, while following the usual instructions.
22 Experimental Support for Sun Studio Compilers for Linux OS
24 Sun Microsystems has released a port of their Sun Studio compilers for
25 Linux. As of May 2019, the last stable release took place on 2017, and
26 one can buy support contracts for them.
27 There are some special instructions for building Perl with Sun Studio
29 on Linux. Following the normal "Configure", you have to run make as
30 follows:
31 LDLOADLIBS=-lc make
33 "LDLOADLIBS" is an environment variable used by the linker to link
35 "/ext" modules to glibc. Currently, that environment variable is not
36 getting populated by a combination of "Config" entries and
37 "ExtUtil::MakeMaker". While there may be a bug somewhere in Perl's
38 configuration or "ExtUtil::MakeMaker" causing the problem, the most
39 likely cause is an incomplete understanding of Sun Studio by this
40 author. Further investigation is needed to get this working better.
