6 xfindproxy - locate proxy services

13 xfindproxy is a program used to locate available proxy services. It
14 utilizes the Proxy Management Protocol to communicate with a proxy man‐
15 ager. The proxy manager keeps track of all available proxy services,
16 starts new proxies when necessary, and makes sure that proxies are
17 shared whenever possible.
18 The -manager argument is required, and it specifies the network address
20 of the proxy manager. The format of the address is a standard ICE net‐
21 work id (for example, "tcp/blah.x.org:6500").
22 The -name argument is required, and it specifies the name of the
24 desired proxy service (for example, "LBX"). The name is case insensi‐
25 tive.
26 The -server argument is also required, and it specifies the address of
28 the target server. The format of the address is specific to the proxy
29 service specified with the -name argument. For example, for a proxy
30 service of "LBX", the address would be an X display address (e.g,
31 "blah.x.org:0").
32 The -auth argument is optional. If specified, xfindproxy will read 2
34 lines from standard input. The first line is an authorization/authen‐
35 tication name. The second line is the authorization/authentication
36 data in hex format (the same format used by xauth). xfindproxy will
37 pass this auth data to the proxy, and in most cases, will be used by
38 the proxy to authorize/authenticate itself to the target server.
39 The -host argument is optional. If xfindproxy starts a new proxy ser‐
41 vice, it will pass the host specified. The proxy may choose to
42 restrict all connections to this host. In the event that xfindproxy
43 locates an already existing proxy, the host will be passed, but the
44 semantics of how the proxy uses this host are undefined.
45 The -options argument is optional. If xfindproxy starts a new proxy
47 service, it will pass any options specified. The semantics of the
48 options are specific to each proxy server and are not defined here. In
49 the event that xfindproxy locates an already existing proxy, the
50 options will be passed, but the semantics of how the proxy uses these
51 options are undefined.
52 If xfindproxy is successful in obtaining a proxy address, it will print
54 it to stdout. The format of the proxy address is specific to the proxy
55 service being used. For example, for a proxy service of "LBX", the
56 proxy address would be the X display address of the proxy (e.g,
57 "blah.x.org:63").
58 If xfindproxy is unsuccessful in obtaining a proxy address, it will
60 print an error to stderr.
