SYNOPSIS

DESCRIPTION

13       cups-lpd is the CUPS Line Printer Daemon ("LPD") mini-server that  sup‐
14       ports  legacy  client systems that use the LPD protocol.  cups-lpd does
15       not act as a standalone network daemon but instead operates  using  any
16       of  the Internet "super-servers" such as inetd(8), launchd(8), and sys‐
17       temd(8).

OPTIONS

20       -h hostname[:port]
21            Sets the CUPS server (and port) to use.

23       -n   Disables reverse address lookups; normally cups-lpd  will  try  to
24            discover the hostname of the client via a reverse DNS lookup.

26       -o name=value
27            Inserts  options  for all print queues. Most often this is used to
28            disable the "l" filter so that remote print jobs are  filtered  as
29            needed  for  printing;  the inetd(8) example below sets the "docu‐
30            ment-format" option  to  "application/octet-stream"  which  forces
31            autodetection of the print file format.

CONFORMING TO

34       cups-lpd  does  not enforce the restricted source port number specified
35       in RFC 1179, as using restricted ports does not prevent users from sub‐
36       mitting  print  jobs.   While  this behavior is different than standard
37       Berkeley LPD implementations, it should not affect normal client opera‐
38       tions.

40       The output of the status requests follows RFC 2569, Mapping between LPD
41       and IPP Protocols. Since many LPD implementations stray from this defi‐
42       nition, remote status reporting to LPD clients may be unreliable.

NOTES

53       The cups-lpd program is deprecated and will no longer be supported in a
54       future feature release of CUPS.

56   PERFORMANCE
57       cups-lpd performs well with small  numbers  of  clients  and  printers.
58       However,  since  a new process is created for each connection and since
59       each process must query the printing system before each job submission,
60       it  does  not scale to larger configurations.  We highly recommend that
61       large configurations use  the  native  IPP  support  provided  by  CUPS
62       instead.

64   SECURITY
65       cups-lpd  currently  does  not  perform any access control based on the
66       settings in cupsd.conf(5) or in  the  hosts.allow(5)  or  hosts.deny(5)
67       files used by TCP wrappers.  Therefore, running cups-lpd on your server
68       will allow any computer on your network (and perhaps the entire  Inter‐
69       net) to print to your server.

71       While xinetd(8) has built-in access control support, you should use the
72       TCP wrappers package with inetd(8) to limit access to only  those  com‐
73       puters that should be able to print through your server.

75       cups-lpd is not enabled by the standard CUPS distribution.  Please con‐
76       sult with your operating system  vendor  to  determine  whether  it  is
77       enabled by default on your system.
