PROLOG

6 This manual page is part of the POSIX Programmer's Manual. The Linux
7 implementation of this interface may differ (consult the corresponding
8 Linux manual page for details of Linux behavior), or the interface may
9 not be implemented on Linux.
10

NAME

12 getwc — get a wide character from a stream
13

SYNOPSIS

15       #include <stdio.h>
16       #include <wchar.h>
17
18       wint_t getwc(FILE *stream);
19

DESCRIPTION

21 The functionality described on this reference page is aligned with the
22 ISO C standard. Any conflict between the requirements described here
23 and the ISO C standard is unintentional. This volume of POSIX.1‐2017
24 defers to the ISO C standard.
25
26 The getwc() function shall be equivalent to fgetwc(), except that if it
27 is implemented as a macro it may evaluate stream more than once, so the
28 argument should never be an expression with side-effects.
29

RETURN VALUE

31       Refer to fgetwc().
32

ERRORS

34       Refer to fgetwc().
35
36 The following sections are informative.
37

EXAMPLES

39       None.
40

APPLICATION USAGE

42 Since it may be implemented as a macro, getwc() may treat incorrectly a
43 stream argument with side-effects. In particular, getwc(*f++) does not
44 necessarily work as expected. Therefore, use of this function is not
45 recommended; fgetwc() should be used instead.
46

RATIONALE

48       None.
49

FUTURE DIRECTIONS

51       None.
